Guess the Number Knitting Edition! Episode 35

Welcome back to...

Oh my god, Gosh, stop looking at me.

Type B...

The Type B podcast.

The podcast of two sisters who like to yap about knitting.

I'm Veronica.

And I'm Gosia.

Um, and, uh, in today's episode,

we are playing a game.

You've probably seen it on social media and TikTok,

Instagram, where each person has a number

and on their foreheads or like hidden somewhere,

and that person has to guess their number,

but can only use like guesses.

It's like you ask like questions about the number.

Yeah, to guess the number.

Or I get an explaining list.

No.

Um, but the episode image should have our numbers.

So everyone except us currently knows our numbers.

Yeah, and we're gonna try to guess and use knitting.

Oh, knitting related questions.

Okay, do you want to start?

Okay, I'll start.

Okay.

Um, if I have this many whips, is it concerning?

Yes, you should not.

No one in their right mind should have this many whips.

That's like actually crazy.

Okay.

I asked that, but I feel like anything over 10.

Literally.

Yeah, like, I don't know if that'll like, you know,

help you much.

Okay, if I was this many stitches off,

like in a, in a like count, like would I have to frog?

Or is this like, oh, I could fix it.

Oh, the correct answer is you should frog.

Your answer would be, I think I can make it work.

Oh, okay.

That's actually good.

I like that.

I like that.

Okay.

Okay.

So I feel like under 10, maybe, for me,

I feel like that's where I'm going.

Like under 10, I'd be like, whatever.

I could just like fudge it a little bit.

Okay.

Um, if I had this many balls of yarn in my yarn stash,

is it concerning?

Like, could I open a yarn store?

No, no, no, no, no, you can't.

No.

But in my yarn stash, is it a lot?

No, I feel like this is like a respectable amount.

You definitely have like a project that you're ready to like,

cast on with this many, or you should at least.

Oh, I could do it.

But it's respectful.

It wouldn't be like crazy.

Like you have like one project maybe in your stash.

You're like, okay, I'm ready to.

Oh, okay.

You actually, I'm curious if you have like this many right now.

Hmm.

Interesting.

Did you go and count my yarns right before this?

No, I'm just thinking about all the like,

back to the episode where you were like showing all like,

you're wrong.

And I'm like, you have so many balls up in here.

So.

That's true.

But I, there's such like little.

I know.

So that's the thing.

Wait, it's my turn.

You're being greedy.

I am.

Um, if I bought this many patterns and didn't intend to use them,

like I just like bought them and like forgot about them in a year,

or let's say in a month, would that be concerning?

In one month you bought this many patterns.

Yeah.

Oh, why are you laughing though?

I feel like.

And I didn't knit any of them.

These are additional patterns that I have not knit.

It's just like, oh, I really like this.

I bought it.

Oh, you're, you're spending money like crazy.

Okay.

Okay.

Okay.

Gotcha.

Interesting.

Okay.

Your turn.

I'm going to steal the same one.

If I had this many patterns in general in my like collection,

is it concerning?

Just in general?

This many?

No.

No?

You've been knitting for a long time.

So I feel like this is like a fine number.

Wait, and you haven't knit this?

And I haven't knit any of them, but I have this many patterns.

Oh, stop.

Stop doing that.

You need an intervention.

Yeah, you need an intervention.

Stop doing that.

I feel like it's over like mid 4050 is where I'm kind of.

Okay.

You're okay.

I just told you to open it.

Yeah.

That's crazy.

Um, okay.

If I bought this many balls of yarn, could I make a sweater?

Oh, absolutely.

Okay.

So interesting.

Would I have leftovers?

Oh, yes.

Oh, okay.

You would have leftovers.

I feel like you've been for a second sweater.

I feel like your numbers are so big.

Oh, maybe not.

I don't know.

Okay, your turn.

If I bought this number of balls of yarn at the store,

are you like girl, you're spending too much money?

Like is this a Ryan Beck call amount of?

Yeah, I feel like it's getting to that amount.

Like what, what yarn weight?

Actually, I think just in general, this is like, I feel like it's not crazy,

but it's kind of like, okay, you got to cut it off.

Like it's kind of enough.

Like I'm done for the year.

Yeah.

Oh no, not for the year.

You just done for that trip.

Oh, okay.

Yeah.

This is hard.

I know.

If I, I'm trying to think if I had finished this many whips in a month,

is that like, wow, you're like on fire?

Yes.

Yeah.

That's impressive.

You like, you're like, I don't even know anyone who can do this.

Yes.

Oh, okay.

Okay.

Gotcha.

Wait, what the freak?

Okay.

I feel like this is like a big number.

What the heck?

That's how I feel about my number two.

If I finished a sweater in this number of days, is it impressive?

Oh my God.

Yeah.

You're like the fastest knitter I've ever met.

That's crazy.

That makes me think it's like under 30.

Like if I could get a sweater done in one month or so.

Also, I don't know if we mentioned, but the number we limited to double digits.

So like you could go like single digit, but up to like just double digit,

we're not doing like something freaking like crazy.

Yeah.

Not like 300 something.

Yeah.

Okay.

Okay.

If I were to cast on this many stitches, like am I making like a beanie?

No.

No.

Maybe in a bulky way.

Okay.

That's what I was thinking.

Yeah.

Okay.

Gotcha.

I feel like you overestimate the number of stitches.

I'm willing to be like, oh, whatever.

I can fix it because I'm like, I feel like this is like in its like 30s, 40s.

And I'm like, I feel like that's like a lot.

Like, I don't think I would like look that I'd be like, okay, it's time to start over.

I don't know.

I feel like wouldn't you like halfway through like a, like a sweater number of stitches.

You're off by like this amount.

You kind of be like, well, I had to get to 250.

I'm off by this number.

I think I can fudge it a little bit.

Okay.

Interesting.

I want to say for the record, I've never been off by double digits.

It's usually just felt like single digits.

So it's definitely a double digit number.

Okay.

Yeah.

That's what I figured.

Yeah.

Yours is too.

Okay.

Okay.

Impressive.

If I cast it on this number of whips in a week, like not like jail.

Jail.

Jail time.

Like I should like sit down and like finish like too many at once.

Yeah, that's way too many.

Okay.

I might get, I'm thinking like 20 to 30 is where my brain is at.

Okay.

I think let's both try and like gauge where the number is and then we could tell the person

if they're hot or cold.

Okay.

Yeah.

Okay.

So you think it's between 20 and 30.

Yeah.

You got to go lower.

Okay.

I think it's between like 30 and 40.

Lower.

Lower.

Lower.

Okay.

Gotcha.

Shoot.

Okay.

If I bought yarn from this many vendors at one like con, is that like way too many?

Like you're like, okay, she's just spending like crazy.

You're spending like crazy and you're buying at every vendor you see.

Oh, okay.

I'm trying to think of like how many, but it's lower than 20 to 30.

Yeah.

So it's got to be in like the teens somewhere.

Okay.

If a pattern asked me to do this many rows of pearls, am I mad?

You could, um, I feel like that, that number is like, I don't know.

I wouldn't be that bad about it, but I'm also coming off of like a Pearl cable sweater.

So like, I'm like, Oh, pearls aren't that bad.

But I feel like it would be kind of annoying.

You're like, Oh really?

Like, well, that's kind of a lot.

Okay.

I think I thought 20 to 30 and you said that was too high.

Okay.

So maybe also in the team.

Yeah, I think we're both like, oh, like the same range.

That's funny.

What if we chose the same number?

Oh my God, that'd be crazy.

Um, I don't think we did though.

I feel like yours was higher than mine.

Okay.

Um, if I went to this many like yarn cons in general in a year.

Girl, you're missing worldwide.

Okay.

Okay.

So, okay.

So I'm still thinking like teens.

It's definitely not like 10 or you're higher than 10.

Okay.

Higher than 10.

Okay.

What about you?

If all I did for this many number of days just knitted, am I like a hermit and haven't

seen the world?

No.

No.

Okay.

I don't think so.

I think this is like your super passionate about a project.

Like I'm having a lot of fun.

Okay.

So I would say it's like a reasonable amount before like taking a

break.

I feel like, I don't know.

I feel, I feel like that's fine.

Okay.

So my thinking is like taking a two week vacation.

Like you could knit in an amount of time.

And that's so like, I'm guessing like 14.

You're really close, but it's lower.

Okay.

Okay.

I'm guessing, I feel like mine's like, is it 18?

Oh my God.

You guessed it.

Really?

Okay.

Oh my gosh.

It's crazy.

It's night number 12.

Yes.

There you go.

Good job.

Good job.

Good job.

That's so crazy.

That's very funny.

Oh my God.

Funny.

We both picked in the teens.

I know.

Well, because that's so tiny.

Well, because I didn't want you to see it like the thing, but I did see

Gosia's first number.

So like she just went really high with it.

So I'm like, I feel like you're probably gonna.

Well, I was like, I felt like you were gonna go higher.

Oh yeah.

Yeah.

Well, I knew that a lot of the questions we'd probably ask would be like, you know,

how many whips, how many stitches.

So it's like something crazy, like 82 would be like, yeah, I know.

That's like the only thing because I was like, there's a certain point where you

start asking questions where it's like, I can't get any more like, I can't.

Like what number could I give you that you would know that it's like 12, right?

Yeah.

It's like kind of hard.

18 stitches.

I was not making a beanie.

Well, like, with a really super chunky weight, maybe.

I feel like also 18 is a number where it's like, I would, I personally would

highly consider just like fudging the stitches to like fit it in.

And a sweater you would do that.

And a sweater.

I feel like I would do that.

So if I feel like if I would do that, you might consider doing that.

18 kind of a lot though.

But it's also like, I don't like if I actually am following the pattern

and I'm this many off and I'm on gauge.

Yeah.

You know, it would be a good question.

It's like, oh, if you're playing, if you're casting on stitches and you have

this many to go and you're like left with like a little short needle, like, could you make it?

Oh, that is a good question.

Yeah.

Because I feel like that's how you would know like, okay, it's like probably lower or like,

you know.

That's a good question.

Yeah.

I feel like that would be a good one.

I feel like in the teens, it's always like whenever you're playing a yarn chicken,

like it feels like those last stitches, even if it's just five, eat up so much of the yarn.

Yeah.

Oh, a hundred percent.

I know.

I'm like, why is this like so much?

Oh, it's so stressful.

There's nothing more stressful than like casting on a project.

I feel like casting on a brand.

Yeah, because I, oh, I either completely overestimate the amount of yarn or it's like

way too short.

Because are you doing long cast on?

Yeah, I do the long tail cast on.

Do you not do that?

I do that, but sometimes I worry about that.

So there's also the other method where you just kind of like,

you know when you're making like a sweater and then you cast on for like armpit.

So you can't really do long tail cast on.

Sometimes I do it that way.

Oh, to begin with?

Yeah.

Oh, interesting.

Just so I don't have to worry about a tail.

I don't know if it's proper way to do that, but you still do that.

Well, we'll see.

What is like the most recent project that you mean that has that cast on?

You're like all of them.

Did the tank top have that?

Maybe.

Now I don't remember.

But the tank top doesn't fit.

So we'll take it off.

But it's not the cast on's fault.

Let's be fair.

That's 100% my fault.

We are not blaming the cast on for that.

I'm not blaming anything but myself for hitting this because it's so clearly on me.

Yeah, that's fair.

That's super fair.

When you ask like if I if you cast on this many whips in a day,

I'd be like, girl, what the are you doing?

It's like choose.

I feel like a respectable number for that is like three.

I feel like you could get up to the tens.

In a day?

Yeah, I'm assuming you're like just like making starting in be like,

I don't want to do it anymore.

10 is crazy.

I feel like again, the only respectable number is like three.

I'm assuming you're not doing sweaters.

I'm assuming like socks.

Or why are you casting on so many in one day?

Like just get started on one of them.

It feels like a day where you're not like you don't want to commit to anything.

You know, you're like testing it out.

No, 10 is crazy.

10 is so crazy.

I should have been like, oh, I feel like these are good questions.

It's like it's in the single digits.

If I had to do this many inches of ribbing, would it be like crazy or would it be like normal?

Because I feel like usually it's like, you know, one to four inches.

Yeah, anything ribbing.

Yeah.

And then if you're like eight, you're like, all right, that's kind of crazy.

The whole sweater is a rib.

Or like, what was the other one I thought of?

I thought of buttons, but it's like our numbers were so high that it's like, yeah.

I mean, you could use like really small ones,

but you could be like, oh, because it's not like, yeah, it's only it's not only yes or no question.

So it could have been like, oh, if you know, like it told me to buy this many buttons,

like what size would they be?

I'd be like, oh, they'd be tiny.

Because like you could put 18 buttons on a very button heavy.

They would be like, you know, they would just be like super tiny and like spaced really closely.

This is true.

Or 12 or 12.

Sorry.

12.

I feel like 12 is like fine.

12 feels like a reasonable, almost like a button up or something kind of.

Yeah.

I don't know.

Really close together though.

That's what I'm saying.

Like small, but like close together.

Yeah.

Because the tulip top, I finally put buttons on it.

You did.

I did.

Oh, the pigeon wishes buttons.

And that was six or eight buttons.

It was already like, I think it was eight buttons.

Really?

On the yeah.

And it's just like a v-neck almost.

So it's like that alone is eight.

And it's a v-neck?

Yeah.

So all of these buttons.

Oh, they're like.

12 millimeters.

I don't know what that is.

I'm going to be honest.

Well, like a centimeter.

I think it's a little less than a half inch.

I don't remember.

So that's like not even that small, but that's like this big, right?

Yeah.

Yeah.

They're like cute.

It's really cute.

You need to show me that.

I will.

I just have to block it.

So it actually looks good.

Yeah.

So I finished one sleeve on my Tyra sweater.

I have probably like four inches of the next sleeve, but I ran out of yarn classic,

but I need to buy a yarn for my next project anyway.

So I think I'm going to do that.

What are you going to do for your next project?

Oh, the loop, loop, loop, loopy studios striped cardigan.

Yes.

I think you're not doing it striped.

I think you were talking about it on the last episode.

Yeah.

And it's a free pattern.

Love a free pattern.

Yeah.

Loopy studio striped cardigan.

And it's a free pattern.

Okay.

I'm very excited.

Do you know what yarn or what color you're going to do it in?

I want to do it, I think, in a maroon.

6 millimeter and 4 millimeter needle.

So probably like worsted weight, I'm assuming.

So yeah, I'm very excited to do it.

Hopefully it'll look cute.

We'll see.

I feel like I finally found a project to break my little hiatus from knitting.

It's a free pattern.

I'll have to find it.

To make a little beret, I thought was really cute.

And I was actually browsing Pinterest and free people had a beret

that was really cute with color work, but it was $92 for a beret.

And I'm like, I can go into my yarn stash and find yarn that I can just use instead.

Yeah.

So I have a really nice brown.

I think when we first started this podcast,

I was working on a cardigan for our other sister, Anna.

And I bought a bunch from, I want to say it was Knitpicks yarns.

And I have a really nice brown.

So the beret only comes in one size.

So I was like, oh, I should actually care about gauge for this one.

Oh, that is cute.

Yeah.

It is the River Beret by Free People.

$92.

Yeah, $92 is crazy, but it is really cute.

It's really cute.

It's very autumn feel, very whimsical.

It makes me think of an acorn in the woods.

So I really want it.

Not for $92.

No.

Instead, I found a free pattern and I'm using my yarn.

So that's free.

I'm just going to make up some color work or something.

But I was trying to make sure to hit gauge.

And this yarns, I want to say a DK or worsted weight.

But if I held yarn two of them together,

I was able to hit the gauge in the six millimeter needles.

I took that one ball of yarn and it's literally a full ball of yarn.

I barely used it when making that other cardigan in Tarja thing.

So then I rewound it holding the two yarns together.

So I have it wound up and I have it ready to go.

I feel like it'll be a really nice weekend project.

Oh, yeah.

I think that'll be super fast.

Are you starting with the top of it or do you start with the band?

You start with the band.

But it's very interesting because it's having me split the yarn

to then work a folded hem.

So you have half the yarn, you knit it,

then you knit the other end, you fold it in half.

So this thickness is the thickness of the rest of the beret, if that makes sense.

Did you already measure it?

Because I think when Gosh and I were talking about this earlier,

she was saying that it's only one size.

So did you already measure it to make sure that it would fit you?

Like the size?

Oh, the actual beret?

Yeah, the actual band around your head.

No, for sure.

Also, are you worried about...

I hope to God you are not blocking it.

Blocking the beret?

Yeah.

Why not?

Because it's going to stretch out and then it's going to be too big on you.

Can't I felt it then?

Oh, yeah.

But do you want to?

I don't know.

Oh, yeah, exactly.

So Gosh just made a face that felt it.

So I mean, yeah, that's an option.

But I don't know.

I personally think that blocking, like soaking it and blocking it is optional.

I think steam blocking is the way to go.

Honestly, I love steam blocking.

It's like the best way to block things.

I think it depends on the piece because I finally block...

I put block in quotes.

I steam blocked the mohair cardigan that I finished

so that I can put it away in my closet and officially be done with it.

And it did block...

Like some of the parts like soften,

but I was like, oh, the really long straps around it would have benefited from blocking.

But I'm not setting up a five mile long blocking mat to do this.

Yeah, that's the other thing.

Sorry.

It's okay.

Yeah, no, you can miss me with that.

No.

So then I just took a little steamer and I like helped iron it out almost.

Yeah, so when I say steam block, I don't own a steamer.

So I literally just iron all of my stuff on a steamer setting.

So you're just holding this big iron thing?

No, I literally lay it flat and I just iron it.

Yeah, I hang it up and then I just do it that way.

I tried to do that, but with an iron, the iron gets really heavy.

And then also, the steam will burn me a little bit.

But like, I'm like, this is true.

I was burning my fingies.

Yeah, because you have to hold the garment open and then you're blocking it.

And then it can just catch your fingers and then you're like, ow.

Ow, ouch.

So yeah, I try.

I don't do that.

Now I'm just like even more lazy and I just like iron it basically and steam it.

Yeah, it can count a little bit.

I mean, it works.

Whatever.

Who cares?

I don't care.

I do want to mention that I had a thought about, because I'm like,

I'm almost done with the cable sweater.

So I still am like curious about what bleaching would do to it.

So I'm like, oh, I might like knit like a swatch.

And then bleach the swatch.

Because I'm like, that is crazy to not test that and just go full blown bleach is kind of like crazy.

To a cable sweater that like turned out really good.

Yeah.

Honestly, claps for you.

Thank you.

For having a little bit of a tester before going.

Well, I mean, I haven't done it yet.

So, no, but yeah, but I'm also like not fully, I don't know, like I might just dye it.

Honestly, like a color.

What yarn material is it?

It's cotton and wool.

Okay, the wool dies easily.

The cotton because the tank top I had is a cotton yarn.

I had to like prep it because it's dye.

And the dye didn't like catch everything fully.

So it's not like all one solid color because of the cotton.

Honestly, it looks cool because yeah, I don't mind that it's so like variegated.

That's kind of how the like yarn is right now.

Actually, it's like kind of variegated to begin with because like the picture when you buy the

cotton merino drops, it's like variegated already.

It's like a darker and a lighter.

So, okay.

Yeah, I think like it would be.

I like it.

Love your swatch idea to do a little testing.

I'm a changed woman.

But I'm also like, I'm curious if I like do just a little bit of bleach.

If it would just bleach it like a little bit.

Like if I diluted enough, you have to dilute it.

No.

Yeah.

Oh, obviously.

I feel like if I dump it in just a bucket of pure bleach, it would just disintegrate in my hands.

Have you seen those videos of the raccoons who get like cotton candy put in the river

and then they bring your hands and they're really sad about it?

That'd be you.

Yeah, that would be me.

That's our big goodbye.

No, yeah, but I'm also curious like if the bleach would like ruin the like feeling

because it is really like squishy right now and really soft.

So, so like if I want to be doing all this, I might need to buy just like four extra balls of yarn

because I need at least like two more to finish the sleeve because I'm holding it double.

And then I need to buy like an extra ball just like test around like the,

do you remember how many balls of yarn it took to make the first sleeve?

It was like one and then some.

So I'm going to need at least like one, like at least four, I would say.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

Like so because I'm holding it together.

So at least like two more to hold this together.

And then an extra two to like do the swatches because I also would need us do

like the experiment with cables because like it's not flat.

So which I don't mind because I love knitting cables.

I think they're so fun, but I wouldn't do like a super intricate one.

Like I would just do like a regular cable and just like see what it looks like.

Yeah.

So yeah, I would have to knit like a swatch with that.

And I wouldn't make them like that big.

I make it like this big.

Yeah, a baby swatch is not like you need it for gauge or whatever.

Yeah, exactly.

I would like make it like tiny.

Yeah, I don't know.

We'll see.

Keep us updated.

Yeah, very curious.

Absolutely.

Follow us on Instagram type B knitting pod to hear Veronica's progress with this.

If I even do it, don't hold me to this.

Saying I know.

Yeah, exactly.

All right.

Well, that was our episode.

Thanks for listening.

I'm one of the sisters, Goshia.

And I'm Veronica.

And we'll catch you on the next one.

Bye.
